In front of a roaring crowd at the Jangchoong Stadium, Korea's number one Lee Hyun Il (left) defeated
"Wonder Boy" Taufik Hidayat to advance to the quarter-finals of men's singles in the Korea Open 2006.
This is their second encounter in Korean soil since the 2002 Asian Games in Busan.
Taufik took the lead by easily winning the first game 21-19. Hyun Il failed to match Taufik's tactical net play.
But Hyun Il make a come back in the second round in a hard-fighting game before winning marginally 23-21.
In the final game, Hyun Il fast-paced play & hard-hitting baseline smashes overcome Taufik's (right) tactical
play stylishly won the game 21-16. The match ended in an agonizing 70 minutes. Hyun Il will face Malaysia's
Sairul Amar Ayob in the quarter-finals. Another Korean, Shon Seung Mo easily stunned one of the favourites
Kenneth Jonassen, who is seeded 3/4. Seung Mo took only 30 minutes to win 21-10, 21-12.
In the women's singles, top seed Xu Haiwen (GER) is still on track in the title chase by defeating Malaysia's
Julia Wong 20-22, 21-15, 21-19. But the surprise came from Eriko Hirose when she defeated
Yao Jie of the Netherlands. Eriko won the first game 21-19 but Yao came back strongly to level-up by
taking the second game 21-18. Despite that both players showed imminence level of skill, it was Eriko
who had a slight edge over Yao Jie, won the third game 21-15.
Korea's top pair Lee Yong Dae & Jung Jae Sung cruised to the quarter-finals in the men's
doubles where they crushed Malaysia's Ong Soon Hock & Tan Bin Shen 21-13, 21-10. They are expected to
face a tough match in the quarter-finals where they will meet Indonesia's Markis Kido & Hendra Setiawan.
In the women's doubles event, Lee Kyung Won & Lee Hyo Jung (KOR) had no problem advancing to the
quarter-finals where they ousted Danish pair Britta Andersen & Mette Schjoldager 21-6, 21-17.
Reigning world champions & top seed Nova Widianto & Liliyana Natsir (INA) is the only remaining pair
from Indonesia in the mixed doubles event. They defeated Ingo Kindervater & Katrin Piotrowski of Poland
